The Photo Gallery

The photgraphs shown here are derived from many sources.  In many cases they are not the most flattering that might have been shown.  In some cases, more's the pity, they are.

Master Chojun Miyagi.  The founder of the Goju style.  A student of Master Kanyro Higaonna, he combined the style of NAHA-TE (quite literally: The Hand as Practiced in Naha, Okinawa) with the softer Chinese techniques he had learned.  His students were many, including Master Gogen Yamaguchi.
Master Gogen Yamaguchi - A student of Master Miyagi who studied with him in Okinawa and returned to Japan bringing Goju Karate with him.  He called his enhanced style Goju-Kai.  He founded a network of Dojos throughout Japan and, at one time, most of the karateka in Japan studied Goju-Kai in one of Master Yamaguchi's dojos.
Grand Master Peter Urban - A student of Shihan Yamaguchi in the years following the war. He brought GOJU back to the United States and founded his famous Dojo in Chinatown in New York City.

Master Urban passed away on April 7, 2004. He wore his master's fist until the day he died.

This photo is prominently displayed on Hanshi Dayton Guinee's web page (see our links section) and the photo credit belongs to him. Hanshi Guinee identifies it as having been taken around 1983.
Master Al Gotay - A student of Master Urban (we've been told that Shihan Gotay was Grand Master Peter Urban's Ichiban - his First Student) after Master Urban began teaching in New York. He has had a long career with the New York City Police Department, training recruits and regular officers in Goju Karate and Judo. His is nationally famous for hosting the annual Urban Cup tournament, attended by Goju karateka from all over the country. He also teaches regularly at his dojo at John Jay College in New York.

Photo credit - unknown - "borrowed" from the NEMAC web site. Thanks NEMAC!
Hanshi William Grady - A student of Master Urban and Master Al Gotay, hanshi Grady began teaching USA Goju in White Plains, NY in the mid-1970's.  He actually had dojos in New Rochelle, Port Chester, and Iona College too.  He currently lives in Nevada, but returns to the East Coast on occasion to "oversee" things.  He has many times presided at combined promotion testing for all the students of his students.  He was one of the founders of the North East Martial Arts Council (NEMAC).
